“Lessons Mama Never Taught Me,” has addressed the most critical issues that are affecting our young girls socially and emotionally today. Society has sent them unhealthy messages that being skinny, pretty, and sexy are what’s popular. This creates unrealistic beauty standards for both women and girls. Parents especially mothers play a major role in the development of their daughter’s self-esteem and self-worth and can change this dangerous trajectory.
Each of the stories provides specific lessons intended to bring awareness to decision- making skills, body image, bullying, healthy relationships, on-line safety and many other essential topics that affect our girls and women. These lessons will empower our youth and ensure positive outcomes when taught as a community effort.
The Rise Foundation of Chicago continues to work closely with the youth to educate and provide the tools necessary to fulfill their life’s mission. The students we service reside in diverse neighborhoods throughout the city. Our programs encourage higher learning, college tours, tutoring and mentoring. We continue to utilize the valuable information that has been presented in “Lessons Mama Never Taught Me,” and are thankful to the women that shared their powerful stories.
